Framing your artwork
Share

A frame serves both decorative and protective functions:
- Enhancement: Frames add a finishing touch that can either subtly support or boldly emphasize the artwork. The frame should complement both the artwork and your interior design. Consider the color, material, and style—be it modern, rustic, or classic.
- Protection: Frames protect edges from wear and keep paper-based works from dust, light and other environmental factors. For valuable or delicate pieces, consider archival-quality frames and glazing.
If standard frames don’t fit your needs, a custom frame can be designed to highlight the unique characteristics of your artwork and the space it will occupy.
Selecting the Ideal Frame
Choosing the right frame depends on the type of artwork. Canvas paintings require a different framing approach than paper-based oil paintings. Here are some examples and things to consider:
Canvas Paintings
- Floater Frames: Provide a contemporary look while keeping edges visible.
- Traditional Frames: Often used for a classic, ornate appearance.
- No Glass Needed: Canvas oil paintings should not be framed under glass to allow proper airflow and prevent trapping moisture.
Paper-Based Oil Paintings
- Stretching & Mounting: Paper oil paintings should be mounted on a rigid board before framing to prevent warping.
- Use UV-Protected Glass: Protects against fading and environmental factors.
- Ensure a Spacer: A gap between the painting and glass prevents sticking or condensation buildup.
- Archival Mounting Materials: Use an acid-free backing to avoid long-term deterioration.
Best Practices for Framing Behind Glass
- Use Spacers or Matting: To prevent direct contact with the glass.
- Choose Non-Reflective, UV-Protective Glass or Museum Glass: Minimizes glare and protects colors.
- Ensure Proper Ventilation: If sealed too tightly, condensation can form, leading to mold or paint damage.
With the right frame and placement, your artwork will not only look stunning but also remain in excellent condition for years to come.
